In maths, the X symbol stands for an unknown variable.
In psychoanalysis the unknown variable is represented by the unconscious, i.e. the sum of mental activities that the subject is not aware of.
We can imagine the unconscious as a place of the human mind not knowable by definition: it’s an uncharted territory, it is the X variable.
Reality itself exists only through its representation and, sometimes, not every reality we experience is representable using conventional narrations.
How to represent the unrepresentable? How to shape the nameless, obscure, inexpressible mental contents through the use of images?
I have imagined the exploration of this dark world: the abyss of the sea, of space, of the unconscious, of phantasy, of the inside of the human body. A world full of fragments, broken objects, entities.
An obscure place, a cave, barely lit by a torch. Inside, we try to find a direction, to understand, to light up the darkness; but every discovery is the beginning of a new doubt, of further uncertainty, a disorientation. A new question: “What is that? What is resurfacing from the deep abyss and reemerging towards the light?”
